Around 1pm on most weekdays you could count on some good action at Ashland MBTA station. CSX was running Q437 out of Framingham (about 2.5 miles east) around 1pm. There was a commuter rail also do by at 1pm. On this day the dispatcher has his hands full as Q174, now a light engine waits for the MBTA train to get around Q437. Just a minute earlier Amtrak west bound Lake Shore went by this location. I did not take that picture as it was just another Genesis unit.
Amtrak 449 lead by Amtrak 49. This was taken from the MBTA station platform in Southboro, Massachusetts. I used a telephoto lens and zoomed in on the red tree to make it look larger. A note, in a recent (Sept 2008) Railfan and Railroad Magazine they showed this locomotive no. 49 in a crossing accident. If you look closely you can see the repair work.
FRSE is now Q437. In the Fall of 2007, almost 10 years after I snagged the 80macs on Charlton Hill, I catch what replaced the 80macs (AC6000s) leading Q437 west out of Southboro, Mass.
This is probably one of the first half dozen railfan shots I took. I did not have a scanner at the time. I knew Amtrak came through around this time. So I waited. It was a calm enough day or the wind was blowing just right, that I heard him blow for the Ashland Crossing about 3 miles away. This is the site of the new Southboro MBTA station. This was shot around 1992 and scanned from a print.
I was off on July 3, 2007 and did some train watching. I caught him at the High Street Bridge in Southboro. The crew was later to be heard on the scanner reporting the number of photographers out today.
Q420 (on left) is done with its work in Westborough Yard is heading east. It gets over taken by a speedier Q116 on the right.
Q437 10/10/08. Due to bad traffic, I barely made it here in time to catch him. As soon as I pulled up Q168 went past heading east. No chance there. I was hoping for more color on this fall day, but the only splashes are just in front of the locomotive. In another week this should be all red and orange as it is basically a swamp to the left.
Q437 10/10/08 heading west through Westborough, Massachusetts. Fall colors are not showing full glory yet.
Q437 on 10/10/08, Westborough, Massachusetts. Two AC6000's and a GP40-2 are in charge. The second unit 5001 is one of CSX's Diversity in Motion painted locomotives.
October 10, 2008. Graffiti has run amuck on this freight car on a westbound CSX freight, (Q437) Westborough, Massachusetts.
I liked this train. I also like going away shots. This is the end of Q437 going around the curve at Westborough, Massachusetts. Some color but not enough to write home about.
Q168 Charlton Hill October 2008
CSX Q168 comes up through the S Curve at Charlton Hill by Gauthier Road
This is from Gauthier Road on Charlton Hill, Charlton, Massachusetts. This is an eastbound working up grade. I had just arrived and it was still foggy when I heard him coming up hill. I thought the fog would ruin my shot, but actually it is one of my favorites. This was scanned from a slide.
Conrail, probably TV6, is working upgrade at Gauthier Road. This was a slide scan from the late 90's. I cannot make out he numbers to tell. Even if it was a 7300 series, they used the Conrail symbols for almost a year after the merger.
This was scanned from a slide in either November of 1996 or 1997. The 80macs were new, Conrail was fairly lenient towards railroad photographers. I got him while sitting near the curve west of CP57 on Charlton Hill. This was FRSE in Conrail Symbols
This is an old slide shot going back a few years. The AC6000's still look in good shape. This is Q420 coming up Charlton Hill. I know it looks like an autorack train, but Q420 carried a lot of autoracks up front that Q264 did not take.
A west bound TOFC/stack train (Q168) is approaching my location on Charlton Hill.
Another shot (close-up) of the units on Q168, the hot east bound UPS train. This is on Charlton Hill east slope August 2008
This is a going away shot of Q168 as it passes me on Charlton Hill east slope, around MP 56.
