P.S. I consider images loaded for screen savers to be for personal use. I have no problem with that use.
The images in the Pennsylvania Gallery contains pictures taken on three trips to Pennsylvania. The first year (2007) I did a little on the West Slope, some shots in Altoona, and some in Scranton. In 2008, I got more coverage into the west of Horseshoe Curve, but I did manage to get a couple more locations in Altoona and stopped by Mifflin. In 2009, I concentrated more between Altoona and east to Tyrone, with a couple of shots in Portage.

An east bound coal train exits Portage Tunnel on the Morning of May 11, 2009. If you look just to the left of the train you will see a couple of yellow road gates. These are usually closed and locked. They are for maintenance of way and railroad use. However, it seems that during deer gun season in November, these gates are sometimes left unlocked because of hunters. The area beyond the gates are considered off limits.
Two eastbound trains. Amtrak and a Freight on the "Slide"
Two intermodal trains meet just below the openings of the two tunnels. You can see the trains strected along the side of the mountain through Bennington (Benny's) Curve. This sight was where the PRR crack passenger train from Detroit to NYC (The Red Arrow) derailed and killed 24 people and injured 131 more on February 18, 1947

Two SD40-2 helpers shove a coal train east bound out of the Portage Tunnel (Track 1) towards Bennington Curve.
An attempt at a night shot. This is what happens when your batteries crap out on you about 10 seconds into the exposure. Lithium batteries do not give warnings and don't last well when temperature is barely above freezing.
An attempt at a night shot, very little modification. Long exposure. One of my earliest attempts
A better night shot, however the original was warmed up some using photo shop software

A Pennsylvania RR caboose sits next to the Gallitzin Tunnels, Gallitzin, PA. May 2007
This was taken at Gallitzin on 5/11/09 from the friendly railfan bridge by the Tunnel Inn. The Altoona area has to be one of the few areas in the country where you can photograph trains and not be confused for a terrorist.

This train is now going down the slide. Unfortunately this is about as close as you can get to it, do to brush, and no parking signs along the street.
This emphasizes the slide a little more. The portal cannot be seen due to the brush and you cannot access it because the access points are on private property. The owners of the property have gotten upset at railfans over the years. There are now no trespassing and no parking signs closer to the portal and now parking signs on this street. There is a public park about 100 yards from this spot where you can park and the hoof it.
